Mr. Isaac Gendelman – Holocaust Survivor Interview

Mr. Gendelman escaped his town and fought the Nazis as part of the resistance. He escaped his town and survived by hiding in the woods and joining the partisans and resistance fighters. His story is similar to that of the movie Defiance.

Jewish people had been living in Poland for almost 1,000 years when Hitler came to power. There were more than 3 million Jews living in Poland when the Nazi’s invaded. Only 50,000 survived in Poland, about 100,000 Jews survived the concentration camps and about 200,000 returned from having escaped to the Soviet Union. Poland’s Jewish communities were completely devastated by the Holocaust. Estimates of the number of Jews living in Poland today range from 5,000-20,000.
